       Message from the President

     Enjoy the great riding weather.

Looking ahead to the next Club meeting, Tuesday September 2nd:

John and Susan will share pictures (and stories) from their latest biking cruise in the Netherlands.

Very important: The AAA and Huntington Public Library sponsored Bike Rodeo will be on Saturday, September 20. Volunteers are desperately needed. A Bike Rodeo introduces children and their parents to the proper rules of the road, and frankly, everybody should take advantage of this program.      Everybody else reports at 9:30- for instructions, hand outs, etc...

4) Helmet Check: 2 people, Check condition and adjustment of helmets

5) Hand Signals: 2 people, Practice how to signal turns and stopping

6) How to safely start and stop: 2 people, From straddling bike to coasting to a stop, to safely dismounting

7) Scanning and Turning: The art of looking to the rear and how to stay on the correct side of the road, 2 people

8) Maneuvering road hazards: 2 people

9) Driveway onto traffic simulation: 2 people

10) Crazy Crossroads: Proper procedures for Stop signs and intersections, 2 people

 (11) Completion: Certificates/goodie bags, back to check-in people)

12) 2 PM clean up: 4-6 people

Bringing tool kits and pumps is highly recommended.
Now, Please go to the calendar and sign up for your task.
Updates will be sent out as the date approaches.

Speaking of the Calendar, check out the MPBC Tour of the Hamptons meet-up on September 21st.
We like to have an HBC presence on this ride with everybody wearing an HBC Jersey.

Below is the Newsday article about 2 illustrious members of our Club, Tony and Ursula!

Volunteers are also needed for this year's Cow Harbor 10K Race in Northport.
People are needed both Friday afternoon/evening before the race, and Saturday, during the race.
        Go to this link:

Sign up for the meeting on September 2nd. There will be lots of goodies and energy drinks to take.
See you on the road,
Karen

The August 20 edition of Newsday featured an article about couples who met while participating in athletic endeavors. There's Tony and Ursula!

The Crankin have been doing many fun rides with interesting destinations. Kenny Schack led a Gold Coast mansion ride, Bob led rides to Manhattan, the Kissena Velodrome, the Ronkonkoma Train station that looks like a new village and the Sphinx. Out of the way destinations for BBQ. What next, the Eiffel Tower?

HBC Club Meeting Minutes 8/6/2025

President Gellert called the meeting to order at 7:31 PM. She pointed out that there were several free items including inner tubes, chain lube and nutrition bars available for free at the front table.

Anthony Oliveri presented the financial report showing that the club is able to donate $8500 to charity and has $3000 available for social and community expenses as a result of the Gold Coast.

Dr. Scott Gross made a motion to accept the minutes of the July club meeting, seconded by Steve Labiner. The minutes were approved.

The president then introduced Doctor Michael Dannenberg, a Huntington Northwell dermatologist who has been a Huntington resident for generations serving the community.

Doctor Dannenberg described several important concerns relating to safety on the bicycle. These included equipment and apparel that offer protection and visibility on the road. He then provided advice and information regarding protection of our skin from the sun. He also described the signs to look for on your skin when cancer may be suspected. The audience proceeded to ask many questions to which Dr. Dannenberg provided clear and succinct answers.

The president thanked Dr. Dannenberg and requested volunteers for an open house presented by Energy Fitness on 9/22.

Karen then read the thank you note sent by the family of Nina Kuscsik who recently passed.

Ms. Kuscsik was a renowned athlete and promoter of women’s rights in athletic competitions and a member of HBC

John Greene gave the Ride Chairman’s report. He reminded ride leaders to list their sweep on the ride report. He also called for volunteers for the Cow Harbor race on 9/20.

Sal Levy gave a short presentation of membership status. There are still around 270 members, with 13 new members this past month. This indicates a dynamic equilibrium between new and non-returning members.

John Greene informed the attendees that the club annual party will be at the Harbor Boat Club again on Saturday, 11/1.

Dr. Scott Gross requested that the membership step up and offer to run for positions including the Board of Directors, president, vice president and secretary.

Steve Labiner gave the Gold Coast report. There were 180 participants on a great day for cycling. Reactions to the ride were nearly all very positive. The club also was able to donate a significant quantity of food to the food bank.

The 50/50 winners were chosen by Kenny Goldfine. Winners were Hugh Parkhurst for the cash and Meri Lewin for the puncture sealer.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:50; motion by Dr. Scott Gross.

Respectfully submitted,

Sal Levy
